More than 2 million Canadians suffer from kidney failure or some kind of kidney related disease such as diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney stones.
Many patients with kidney disease end up requiring hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. These treatments have improved significantly over the years but still negatively impact the quality of life of our patients.
The number of Canadians on dialysis will double in the next 10 years. More than 3,000 Canadians are on a waiting list for a kidney transplant.
We need to continue to carry out research projects that will prevent people from developing kidney disease, improve accessibility to kidney transplantation and improve the well being of patients with kidney disease.
